Family ties

IN MEMORY OF LAURENCE O'SHAUGHNESSY, 13-11-1938 to 03-05-2003
Did you know my cousin Laurence O'Shaughnessy? I hardly did myself, and in fact had not seen him for 15 years.

WHAT IS A HERO?
When I workout at the gym I make lists in my head to take my mind off the boring repetition of the treadmill or rowing machine.

MEMORIES OF MUM
They wheeled her toward me, at last she was here,

A MOTHER'S DEATH
He called at his favourite time, just before dawn. My mother's soul was still wrapped in mortal flesh, still there.

MINE'S A DOUBLE
When we were expecting our second child, we were expecting just that. What we were not expecting was a two for the price of one special, but at our five month scan this is what we were told.

MY SISTER LAURA
On January 26 2002 Laura and I attended a party with our siblings, children and grandchildren in the Plaza Hotel, New York.

YOUR ANCESTORS - TODAY'S LATEST HOBBY
From the age of ten, I have always been interested in family history. The purpose of this article is to set out the knowledge I have acquired, over the years, about this fascinating subject, in the hope that it may encourage others to take up the hobby.

JUST TO SAY ... THANKS, MUM
This year they all forgot. I'm trying not to care - after all, it's a commercial racket isn't it?

YESTERDAY'S SECRETS
I was six when Laxhmi came to stay. I didn't know who she was, only that she was going stay with us for a while. When she arrived that evening I was awake. I heard the doorbell and daringly I got out of bed and crept to the top of the stairs.

MY MUM
Hockey made me feel alive, it made me feel part of something important. Something that I could contribute to. I loved the whole concept, I understood my role, I was part of a big team, all playing for the same reason: To win!!

BOXES
Annie grunted with pleasure when she spotted the cardboard boxes behind the hotel's service door. They had once contained Baxter's soups and Fu-sheng Ready Meals.

HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN TO ME?
My Story - A True One

DANNY'S STORY
In the early 80s my elder brother Danny left home and simply disappeared for 3 years. My parents were distraught for obvious reasons although I felt that my 22 year old brother was a pretty resourceful chap and that he had an adventurous hidden agenda and would one day re-emerge, successful and happy.

THE DAY TRIP
The phone rang and as soon as I picked it up I heard the little voice at the other end saying, "Hello, hello", I knew it was mum. "Sorry, sorry to ring so early dear, but I thought I would try and catch you before you go to work.

NICE TO MEET YOU
I met a man the other day, he said he knew me and my family when we lived in Brighton, so we chatted about old times and when he left he said he would keep in touch. I waved goodbye and walked back into my house, sat down and thought 'Who the hell was that'?

TO LIZ
It was a warm August evening in 1993. Delivered by hand, the letter from my friend Liz said: "I have some idea of what you're going through. No - you haven't lost your kids - they'll probably need time, just like you and everyone else. I know that the time it takes is painful. Keep your chin up - although it seems against the odds..... Love Liz."

TOM'S STORY
This is a true story of a wonderful man named Tom. He was a great naturalist, gardener and knew every bird and plant. He was also a herbalist and could give you a cure for most of your aches and pains and illnesses. He was often found walking in the Derbyshire Dales, which he knew like the back of his hand and was a most interesting man to talk to.
