DREAMS AND HOPES MY GHANIAN EXPEDITION My name is Ali Paver, I am 18 years old and I have had right-sided hemiplegia since having open- heart surgery when I was aged two. I thought you might like to hear about how I spent summer 2003. QUOTIDIAN The first time I heard that word I thought it sounded incredibly exotic. DIVING THE GREAT BARRIER REEF One of the most amazing experiences I have had on my travels was diving the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. MY AFRICAN DREAM One of my dreams has always been to travel to South Africa and experience the many variety of species, and beautiful country, and to also observe them within their own environment and not in captivity. SETTING SAIL III: INTO THE TEETH OF THE STORM AND BEYOND. I write this third report following my return from taking part in the third leg of the Times Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2000 as a member of crew aboard Portsmouth Clipper. SETTING SAIL PART II - RUDE AWAKENING In this second report, for a taste of my experiences during training for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, I draw on my notes of the first of the compulsory four weeks of training which every crew member has to undergo. SETTING SAIL Part I: Prelude. I am the only sailor in my family, to my knowledge. In this first report I describe how I became interested in sailing and how and why, much later, I signed up for a crew's berth for part of the Times Clipper 2000 Around the World Yacht Race. LONELINESS OF A LONG DISTANCE CYCLIST Alan Randall (55) and Susan Smith (52) live in Eastbourne. They are cycling from Sussex to John o'Groats in one week's holidays each year. THE TRAIN THAT TOOK THE WRONG TURNING I hear you ask, "What was I doing at 2 am in a railway carriage in Edinburgh Waverley Station?" MY FIRST SKI HOLIDAY I am at a distinct disadvantage in our house. Whenever I want to do something which 'they' don't, I am grossly outvoted. By the same rule, when 'they' make a decision I have the option of joining them or being left out. SAILING AND ALL THAT JAZZ One Saturday in May 1994 my attention was taken by an advertisement in the holiday section of one of the national papers. It was a cruise on the QE2 to New York. The theme was jazz and it was to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ship's maiden voyage. As a life-long lover of ships, modern jazz and any excuse for a party, I knew that I would have to go. GOOD AFTERNOON, GOODWOOD! Magically, from the very first moment you arrive, either by car, bus or train, the atmospheric build-up to the summer meeting quickens, indeed positively races, as you squeeze your optimistic frame through the ever-jerky turnstiles of Grandstand or Public Enclosure. FLIGHT OF FANCY I normally listen to Radio Four's Today before I get up. This morning I found myself listening to some chap explaining why he had included in his recently published book a sentence nearly 14,000 words long! Yes, 14,000 (fourteen thousand)!! FECAMP King Charles II's escape from the battle of Worcester across England and finally his sail from Shoreham to Fécamp, France makes a great story. FROM ADEN WITH LOVE Whilst travelling by sea to the Far East the ship stopped at the Port of Aden to refuel and replenish water and other supplies. HOLIDAY TRIP TO COINCIDENCE The year 2000 was the 45th year of our marriage. CANNES 15th June to 1st July 2000 BRAVE MEN, KIND SUPPORT Yes, I was frightened - I have to admit there were two moments of real fear. SILLIAN (FOR A RATHER DIFFERENT HOLIDAY!) The small market town , barely larger than a village is situated in Austria's Sud-Tyrol, straddling the River Drau along the Puster Valley. With a population of just over 2000, this delightful and as yet relatively unknown area is within walking distance of the Italian border. In fact ownership of this region has changed hands between the Austrian's and the Italian's several times over the last two hundred years. A DAY OF DISCOVERY IN DIEPPE ''Un jour sans vin, c'est un jour sans Soleil'' ''A day without wine, it's a day without Sunshine'' MY MILLENNIUM DOME Taking advantage of almost door to door transport in the form of a motor coach organised from Hove town hall, I decided to visit the dome on my own. THE GREEK HOLIDAY We met on a beach in Crete many years ago. A buxom, tanned blonde woman asked me for a light whilst I was lounging, semi-comotose on the hot, white sand, watching my boyfriend playing in the surf with my two sons. We chatted idly after she offered me a cigarette and within a few seconds realised we had a lot in common. She introduced her husband and two daughters and suddenly we were all sitting in the beach bar. We shared a bottle of Retsina and Pat and I were soon giggling like schoolgirls, the two men where chatting like old friends and the kids were dashing around the beach as if they had grown up together. WHAT A HOLIDAY It was the usual dark, miserable winter and I decided I would go to Malta for Christmas by way of a change. I was hoping I would find brilliant sunshine and have a pleasant, easy-going week. AUSTRALIA TRIP I would like to share an amazing holiday experience I had in Australia three years ago.
